Albon Upbeat About Williams' Chances in Miami

As the Formula 1 circus rolls into Miami for the fifth round of the 2024 season, Alexander Albon is brimming with confidence about Williams’ prospects of finally opening their points account. Despite a difficult start to the year, the Thai-British driver believes the characteristics of the Miami International Autodrome could play into the team’s hands.

“Actually, if you look at last year here, we had the car – before the upgrade, so it was not the quickest car – but we were still near points,” Albon told the official F1 channel, reflecting on Williams’ performance at the same venue in 2023. “I think we qualified P12 at the time and we didn’t have quite as strong a race, but the areas where we really focussed on from the FW45 to the FW46, there are a lot of the corners that this track has.”

Albon’s optimism stems from the progress Williams has made with their 2024 challenger, the FW46, which features significant upgrades over its predecessor. The team has struggled to extract performance from the new car thus far, but Albon believes the characteristics of the Miami circuit could suit their package better.

“So I’m excited to see. Hopefully, the progress is strong. Points are always going to be tricky, especially with the top five teams, but I’m the most optimistic I’ve been,” he added, acknowledging the stiff competition at the sharp end of the grid.

Williams, along with AlphaTauri and Haas, are the only teams yet to score a point in the 2024 championship, making this weekend’s race a crucial opportunity to get their campaign on track. While a top-ten finish may seem like a tall order given the formidable pace of the front-runners, Albon’s confidence suggests the Grove-based team could spring a surprise in the sunshine state.

The 27-year-old’s optimism is a welcome change from the despondency that has plagued Williams in recent years. The former race-winning team has fallen on hard times, but Albon’s positive attitude could be the catalyst for a much-needed resurgence.

As the weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on the Williams garage, where a determined Albon and his crew will be working tirelessly to unlock the potential of their car. A points finish in Miami would not only provide a morale boost but also serve as a testament to the team’s resilience and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.

In a sport where fine margins can make all the difference, Albon’s upbeat demeanor could prove to be the X-factor that propels Williams back into the points-scoring positions. The journey may be arduous, but with determination and a pinch of optimism, anything is possible in the high-octane world of Formula 1.
