Barcelona Ousts Napoli, Reaches Champions League Quarters
In a highly entertaining match at the iconic Montjuic Stadium, Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Italian champions Napoli. The aggregate score of 4-2 marked Barcelona’s first appearance in the competition’s final eight since the 2019-20 season, ending a four-year drought.
The Catalan giants came out firing on all cylinders, pressing high and giving Napoli little time to settle. Their efforts were rewarded early on, with young talent Fermín López opening the scoring by calmly slotting home a pull-back from Raphinha. Barcelona’s onslaught continued, and João Cancelo doubled the lead, driving home a rebound from Raphinha’s curling effort that struck the post.
However, Napoli refused to go down without a fight. Amir Rrahmani halved the deficit before halftime, side-footing home after a well-worked move from Matteo Politano. The visitors had their moments, but Barcelona’s rock-solid defense, marshaled by the exceptional 17-year-old Pau Cubarsí, kept them at bay.
In the second half, Napoli threw everything they had at Barcelona, but the hosts’ resilience and clinical finishing proved too much to overcome. Robert Lewandowski, the talismanic striker, put the tie to bed with a simple tap-in, fashioning a neat one-two with midfield maestro Ilkay Gündogan before slotting past a helpless Alex Meret.
“Very happy, Barcelona are in the top eight in Europe. It was a well-deserved qualification, a game dominated in attack and defense, but also an excellent game by Napoli,” said Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez, who has announced his departure at the end of the season.
For Napoli, the disappointment was palpable, having reached the quarterfinals last season for the first time. “There is disappointment because we came here to try to win, and we didn’t succeed,” lamented manager Francesco Calzona. “We got off to a very bad start, and if you concede so much to this team in the long run, you lose it.”
Barcelona’s triumph in the Champions League could prove to be their last realistic chance for silverware this season, having been eliminated from the Copa del Rey and trailing LaLiga leaders Real Madrid by seven points. However, with a blend of youth and experience, and the talismanic Lewandowski leading the charge, the Blaugrana faithful can dare to dream of European glory once more.
As the draw for the quarterfinals looms, Barcelona’s return to the continent’s elite stage promises even more enthralling encounters. For now, though, they can savor a hard-fought victory over Napoli, a testament to their resilience and determination to reclaim their place among Europe’s aristocrats.
