Capitals Bounce Back, Edge Jets in Shootout Thriller
The Washington Capitals bounced back from consecutive losses in emphatic fashion, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 7-6 in a high-scoring shootout thriller on Sunday afternoon. The game was a back-and-forth affair that had fans on the edge of their seats until the final moments.
Washington got off to a fast start, with Alex Ovechkin opening the scoring just over two minutes into the contest. The Jets responded quickly though, as Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor tallied to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead after one period.
The second period was even more wild, with the two teams combining for six goals. Dylan Strome, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Ovechkin all scored for the Capitals, while Connor, Josh Morrissey, and Cole Perfetti replied for the Jets. Heading to the third period tied 4-4, it was evident this game would go down to the wire.
Nikolaj Ehlers and Tom Wilson traded goals in the third to make it 5-5 and force overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the game went to a shootout. Ovechkin and Strome scored for Washington, while only Scheifele could beat Capitals goalie Charlie Lindgren in the skills competition, giving the Caps the dramatic 7-6 victory.
Ovechkin’s two goals gave him 813 for his career, putting him just five back of tying Gordie Howe for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list. The offensive outburst was much-needed for Washington, who had scored just four total goals during their two-game skid.
The win kept the Capitals’ faint playoff hopes alive, as they now trail the Pittsburgh Penguins by seven points for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 13 games remaining. Meanwhile, the Jets’ lead over the Vegas Golden Knights for top spot in the Western Conference Central Division was trimmed to two points.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, with the Capitals visiting the New York Rangers and the Jets heading home to host the Calgary Flames. While high-scoring affairs like this one make for entertaining hockey, both clubs will surely be looking for a bit more structure and defensive responsibility in their upcoming contests.
After trading so many goals and momentum swings, each team can take something positive out of earning at least a point in this one. But with the playoffs drawing near, these types of high-event, high-stress games could end up serving as valuable experience and preparation for the intensity to come over the next couple months.
