Dhoni's Lucky Charm Sidelined: CSK Rocked by Double Injury Blow
The defending champions Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a severe blow ahead of their IPL 2024 title defense, with two of their star performers from last season ruled out due to injuries. As the Chennai-based franchise gears up to begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore next week, they will be missing the services of Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana and New Zealand opener Devon Conway for at least the first half of the tournament.
Pathirana, who was labelled as MS Dhoni’s “special” go-to bowler during CSK’s triumphant 2023 season, suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s recent T20I series against Bangladesh. The 25-year-old right-arm pacer had picked up the injury in the second match of the series on March 6 and had to leave the field without completing his bowling spell.
According to reports, Pathirana is expected to be sidelined for at least four to five weeks, ruling him out of the entire first leg of the IPL 2024 season. A senior CSK official expressed disappointment at the news, stating, “We have to talk to SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) to know when he will be available. He is one of our premier bowlers, but these things happen.”
Pathirana’s unique slingy action and deceptive pace had made him a nightmare for batters in the previous IPL season, where he picked up 19 wickets in 12 matches at an impressive economy rate of 8.01. His absence will undoubtedly be a significant setback for CSK, who had heavily relied on the Sri Lankan’s ability to provide crucial breakthroughs during the middle overs.
Adding to CSK’s woes is the injury to their explosive opener, Devon Conway. The New Zealand batter sustained a finger injury during a recent T20I game against Australia and is likely to miss the first half of the IPL 2024 tournament as well.
Conway’s absence at the top of the order will be a massive blow for the Chennai-based franchise, who had heavily depended on the Kiwi’s ability to provide blistering starts alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. The left-hander had been in stellar form during the 2023 season, amassing 672 runs at an impressive average of 38.94 and a strike rate of 143.59.
With two of their key performers sidelined, CSK will be heavily reliant on their experienced campaigners, such as MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Moeen Ali, to step up and deliver in the early stages of the tournament. The franchise will also be hoping that their pace attack, spearheaded by Deepak Chahar and the experienced Dwayne Bravo, can make up for Pathirana’s absence.
Moreover, CSK will be counting on the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, and Shivam Dube to shoulder the responsibility in the batting department until Conway’s return. The team’s depth and experience have been their strengths in the past, and they will need to draw upon those qualities to navigate through this challenging phase.
As the IPL 2024 season approaches, the injuries to Pathirana and Conway have undoubtedly dealt a significant blow to CSK’s title defense aspirations. However, with a wealth of talent and a proven track record of overcoming adversities, the Chennai-based franchise will be hoping to bounce back strongly and continue their dominance in the world’s premier T20 league.
