Former Pak Pacer Aaqib Javed Joins Sri Lanka as Bowling Coach
In a move aimed at strengthening their bowling attack ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has roped in former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed as the national team’s fast bowling coach. The 50-year-old, who is currently serving as the director of cricket operations and head coach of the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Premier League, will work with the Sri Lankan side until the conclusion of the marquee ICC event scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA.
Aaqib’s appointment comes as a strategic decision by SLC to tap into his wealth of international experience, both as a player and coach. The former right-arm pacer represented Pakistan in 163 ODIs and 22 Tests, capturing a total of 236 international wickets during his illustrious career. He was also a part of Pakistan’s historic 1992 World Cup-winning team, further adding to his credentials.
“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Aaqib’s coaching resume is equally impressive. He has previously served as the bowling coach for the Pakistan national team and has also worked with the UAE and Afghanistan teams in various capacities. During his tenure with the UAE, the team secured ODI and T20I status, qualified for the 2015 ICC Men’s 50 Over World Cup, and featured in the qualifiers for the 2014 T20 World Cup.
Moreover, Aaqib guided the Pakistan U19 team to a World Cup triumph in 2004 and was part of the coaching staff when Pakistan clinched the 2009 T20 World Cup in England.
The Sri Lankan team has been on a quest to improve their bowling department, and Aaqib’s appointment is expected to provide the much-needed impetus. With his vast experience and proven track record, he is well-positioned to impart valuable knowledge and guidance to the Sri Lankan pacers, helping them gear up for the challenging conditions they might face in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
As Sri Lanka aims to make a strong impact in the prestigious tournament, Aaqib’s role as the fast bowling coach will be pivotal in shaping the team’s bowling attack and providing them with the competitive edge required to excel on the global stage.
