Grizzlies' Clarke Nears Return After Achilles Injury
The Memphis Grizzlies have been patiently awaiting the return of key frontcourt player Brandon Clarke, and that wait may finally be over soon. Clarke, who suffered a torn left Achilles tendon back on March 3rd against the Denver Nuggets, has been diligently rehabbing with the goal of getting back on the court before season’s end.
That could become a reality as soon as this week. For Monday’s game against those same Nuggets, the Grizzlies listed Clarke as “doubtful” - the first time this season he has carried any designation other than “out.” While doubtful indicates it is unlikely he suits up for that particular contest, it represents significant progress in his recovery timeline.
Clarke’s injury was a brutal blow both for the player and team midway through this campaign. The 27-year-old forward had emerged as an invaluable part of the Grizzlies’ rotation, providing elite energy, defense and finishing ability off the bench. Despite not being a starter, he has averaged double-digit scoring in each of his four NBA seasons.
With Memphis already eliminated from playoff contention, the organization could have played it safe and shut Clarke down for the year to ensure he makes a full recovery. However, both GM Zach Kleiman and head coach Taylor Jenkins have been clear about their desire to get Clarke some reps in before the offseason.
The extended minutes would serve as a confidence booster for Clarke himself, allowing him to test out his repaired Achilles in live game action. It also lets the coaching staff monitor his condition as they start planning for his projected role during the 2023-24 season.
Of course, Clarke’s immediate impact will be limited as he works his way back into game shape following the prolonged absence. But his presence alone, even in short bursts, should provide an emotional lift to a Grizzlies roster that has battled a ridiculous number of injuries this year.
If he is unable to go on Monday, Clarke’s likeliest return would come at home on Wednesday when the LakersLakers visit Memphis. Regardless of the specific date, TeamGrizzlies fans will simply be elated to have one of their most energetic and productive players back in uniform as the season winds down.
For Brandon Clarke, finally completing his long road back from such a serious injury will be an enormous personal accomplishment and step towards regaining his pre-injury form. With a summer of rest and workouts ahead, he should be primed to reassume his supersub role next season and beyond.
