Leipzig's Firepower Too Hot for Struggling Köln

RB Leipzig’s pursuit of a Champions League spot gathered steam on Friday night as they overcame a struggling FC Köln side 3-1 at the RheinEnergieStadion. The visitors raced into a three-goal lead before Köln managed a late consolation, with Marco Rose’s men now unbeaten in their last four Bundesliga matches.

It was a much-needed win for Leipzig, who had dropped points in disappointing draws against Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg recently. They showed their champion mentality however, refusing to take the foot off the gas even after going 3-0 up to kill off any hopes of an unlikely Köln comeback.

Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring after just nine minutes, profiting from some sloppy defending to fire Leipzig ahead. The French striker has now scored 16 goals in the Bundesliga this season, cementing his status as one of the most lethal marksmen in Germany.

Köln showed some signs of life after conceding the opener, but their frail defensive credentials were exposed once again in the 27th minute. Dani Olmo’s teasing cross from the left found an unmarked Benjamin Henrichs at the back post, and the full-back made no mistake with a thumping headed finish.

The points were effectively sealed six minutes into the second period. A rapid Leipzig counter caught Köln napping, with Olmo playing in Dominik Szoboszlai who showed great composure to slot past the onrushing Marvin Schwäbe.

To their credit, Köln continued to battle and pulled one back through Sargis Adamyan’s sweetly struck volley in the 79th minute. But it was far too little, too late for the Billy Goats, who remain rooted in 16th place and firmly in the thick of the relegation dogfight.

For Leipzig, this statement victory provides real momentum as the run-in for Champions League qualification intensifies. They now sit just three points behind fourth-placed Union Berlin, with a steely determination coursing through Marco Rose’s side to make up that deficit.

Despite their recent struggles, few could question the exceptional quality Leipzig possess in the attacking third. The pace and movement of Nkunku, Olmo and Szoboszlai was a nightmare for Köln’s defence to handle, with the trio combining for 16 shots, 9 of which were on target.

At the other end, goals have been extremely hard to come by for Köln this season. Their tally of just 20 in 26 Bundesliga games is comfortably the worst in the division. On nights like this against elite opposition, that chronic lack of firepower was ruthlessly exposed.

As the battle to beat the drop intensifies, Köln will need to find some attacking inspiration from somewhere if they are to preserve their Bundesliga status. For Leipzig’s part, this was a commanding performance that enhanced their credentials as serious top four contenders.

With crucial matches against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig still to come, there is no margin for error now in Steffen Baumgart’s survival mission at Köln. But for Marco Rose and his Leipzig charges, the Champions League dream burns brighter than ever.
