Liverpool Stay in Title Hunt with Hard-Fought Fulham Win
Liverpool kept their fading Premier League title hopes alive with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage. The victory leaves Jürgen Klopp’s side level on points with Arsenal, setting up a tantalizing Merseyside derby against Everton on Wednesday.
The visitors took the lead through a sublime Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick, but Timothy Castagne’s equalizer on the stroke of half-time threatened to derail Liverpool’s title aspirations. However, second-half goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota secured all three points, ensuring the three-way title race remains wide open.
Klopp had rung the changes, making five alterations to his starting line-up in a bid to shake off the profligacy that had plagued his side in recent weeks. And the visitors almost made the perfect start, with Luis Díaz squandering a glorious chance in the opening minutes.
Fulham, safe in mid-table, played with freedom, and Alex Iwobi’s marauding runs down the flanks caused Liverpool’s defense occasional alarm. But it was the visitors who drew first blood, Alexander-Arnold curling home a delightful 25-yard free-kick after João Palhinha had upended Jota.
The lead, however, was short-lived. Rodrigo Muniz and Andreas Pereira had already gone close for the hosts when Castagne swept home from close range after Iwobi’s cross had caused chaos in the Liverpool box.
Klopp’s men regrouped at half-time, and Gravenberch restored their advantage with a sweetly struck effort from the edge of the area. Jota then added a third, slotting home after fine work from Cody Gakpo, to give Liverpool breathing space.
Marco Silva’s side continued to press, but Liverpool’s experience shone through as they saw out the closing stages with relative comfort. Klopp was able to introduce Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez from the bench, as the Reds kept their title dreams burning bright.
The victory sets up a mouthwatering clash with city rivals Everton on Wednesday, with the Premier League title race now a three-horse race between Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City. For Klopp and his side, the dream of a sensational swansong remains alive – for now.
