Luton Runners' Marathon Journey for Cancer Charity

As thousands of runners gear up for the iconic London Marathon, a local running club from Luton is making strides for a meaningful cause. The Luton Lions, a community-driven group formed in 2017, has set its sights on raising thousands of pounds for the Children with Cancer charity through their participation in this year’s marathon.

Among the dedicated runners is Imran Uddin, a 37-year-old first-time marathoner whose journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Balancing his training with the observance of Ramadan, Imran often found himself pounding the pavement late at night, fueled by determination and a deep sense of purpose.

“The first few times running during Ramadan was an experience, to say the least, but after the first few, getting adjusted to it, it was okay,” Imran shared. “We tried to time it so we run and as soon as we finish running, we open (break) our fast.”

Despite the challenges, Imran remains undeterred, his eyes set on the finish line. “I am really looking forward to it (London Marathon), I just need to push away the nerves,” he said, hopeful that the crowd’s energy will spur him on. While his goal is to complete the grueling 26.2-mile course in 4.5 hours, his true victory lies in crossing that finish line, no matter the time.

The Luton Lions’ journey extends far beyond the marathon course. Founded by Sujel Miah, the club’s mission is rooted in promoting good health, fostering connections, and giving back to the community. “It’s about our health and well-being, but it’s also about our connections with others, friendships, and helping each other along the journey,” Sujel explained.

Tragically, the club lost one of their own to cancer, a loss that has fueled their determination to support families affected by this devastating disease. “We’d like to help children with cancer, as a tribute to all the goodness that he brought and the difference he made to lives of others,” Sujel said, underscoring the club’s commitment to honoring their friend’s memory.

On Sunday, more than 30 members of the Luton Lions will take to the streets of London, their footsteps echoing with purpose. Among them is Leigh Betts, a seasoned runner who has already conquered nine marathons, including two previous London races. “I really enjoy running, it’s good for your mental health, its the community feel - the Luton Lions are amazing to run with,” she shared.

Leigh’s advice to first-timers like Imran is a testament to the resilience required for such an endeavor. “You really have to dig deep- you get to about 18-20 miles, and then that’s when the marathon actually starts. Because you’ve done 20 miles in your training - so you really have to dig deep.”

As the Luton Lions embark on this incredible journey, their story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of community, perseverance, and a shared purpose. With every stride, they honor the memory of those lost, while paving the way for a future where no child has to suffer from cancer.

Through their unwavering determination and the support of a community rallying behind them, the Luton Lions are not just running a marathon – they’re redefining what it means to make a difference, one step at a time.
