Magic Snaps Raptors' 6-Game Skid in 113-103 Victory
The Orlando Magic put an end to the Toronto Raptors’ season-worst six-game losing skid with a convincing 113-103 victory on Friday night. The Magic, who have now won seven of their last nine games, were led by Franz Wagner’s 19 points and a well-rounded performance from rookie sensation Paolo Banchero.
Banchero, the top overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, showcased his versatility with 17 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. His impressive stat line highlighted his ability to impact the game in multiple ways, a trait that has made him one of the frontrunners for the Rookie of the Year award.
The Magic’s balanced scoring attack proved too much for the short-handed Raptors, who were missing several key players, including All-Star forward Scottie Barnes, center Jakob Poeltl, and forward Chris Boucher. Gary Trent Jr. did his best to keep Toronto in the game, pouring in a season-high 31 points, but his efforts ultimately fell short.
The Raptors were also dealing with the tragic loss of RJ Barrett’s younger brother, Nathan, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 20. Head coach Darko Rajakovic acknowledged the difficult circumstances and stated that Barrett would be given as much time as needed to grieve with his family.
Despite the emotional toll, the Raptors came out firing in the first half, taking a nine-point lead at one point. However, the Magic’s resilience shone through as they clawed their way back, with Wagner leading the charge in the second quarter to give Orlando a 50-48 halftime advantage.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point, as the Magic embarked on a decisive 14-0 run, propelled by Banchero’s seven points during that stretch. Orlando took an 84-73 lead into the final frame and never looked back, securing their seventh victory in nine games and extending the Raptors’ misery.
Jalen Suggs chipped in with 16 points for the Magic, while Wendell Carter Jr. and Cole Anthony contributed 15 and 12 points, respectively. For the Raptors, Immanuel Quickley recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, while Jordan Nwora and Bruce Brown added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The two teams will have an opportunity to renew their rivalry on Saturday night when they meet again in Orlando. The Raptors will be looking to end their losing streak and turn their fortunes around, while the Magic will aim to maintain their momentum and continue their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
