Marquette's Kolek Ruled Out for Big East Quarters, Eyes NCAA Run

Marquette’s star point guard Tyler Kolek has been ruled out for the Big East Tournament quarterfinals as the Golden Eagles’ coaching staff prioritizes his recovery from an oblique injury ahead of the looming NCAA Tournament.

Kolek, a senior and potential All-American, has been sidelined since exiting Marquette’s February 28th home game against Providence with the oblique issue. Head coach Shaka Smart provided an update on Kolek’s status during Wednesday’s media availability, confirming he will not play in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup.

“He’s still day-to-day,” Smart said. “Not planning on him playing tomorrow.”

While Smart left the door open for a potential Kolek return later in the Big East Tournament, the focus appears to be getting the floor general fully healthy for the NCAA Tournament.

“The plan is absolutely for him to play next week (in the NCAA Tournament),” Smart stated. “He’s really made good progress.”

Kolek’s absence has been a significant loss for the Golden Eagles, who rely heavily on the Rhode Island native’s scoring, playmaking, and leadership abilities. However, Smart understands the bigger picture and is taking a cautious approach with Kolek’s recovery.

“It’s important for him to get healthy,” Smart emphasized. “That’s the most important thing. To get back to full health.”

The Marquette coach acknowledged the unique nature of Kolek’s oblique injury, noting it’s an issue the staff has limited experience dealing with. As a result, they’re erring on the side of caution to ensure Kolek is at full strength for the NCAA Tournament.

“If today was the national championship game, he would be playing,” Smart said. “The Big East tournament is obviously a big deal and we want to win, but we also have to make sure we get back on that airplane from New York to Milwaukee feeling better about coming out here in terms of his health.”

Kolek’s competitive spirit has undoubtedly been tested during his absence, but the senior understands the importance of prioritizing his long-term health. After experiencing a hand injury that hampered Marquette’s NCAA Tournament run last season, Kolek and the Golden Eagles are determined to make a deep march this year with their leader at full strength.

While the Big East Tournament quarterfinals will be a hurdle without Kolek, Marquette’s sights are set on the bigger prize of a successful NCAA Tournament campaign. With Smart’s cautious approach and Kolek’s determination, the Golden Eagles hope to have their star point guard back on the court and firing on all cylinders when it matters most.
