NIT Madness 2024: Bracket Bonanza Awaits

As the college basketball season winds down, all eyes turn towards the madness of March and the anticipation of the upcoming tournaments. While the NCAA Tournament garners most of the attention, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is a prestigious event in its own right, showcasing some of the best teams that narrowly missed out on the Big Dance.

This year’s NIT field promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with powerhouse programs like Seton Hall, Indiana State, Villanova, and Wake Forest leading the charge. The NIT committee has unveiled a new format for 2024, exempting two teams from each of the major conferences: the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC.

The first round action kicks off on March 19th and 20th, with the top seeds facing formidable opponents right out of the gate. Seton Hall will battle it out against Saint Joseph’s, while Wake Forest takes on App State. Indiana State and Villanova will have their hands full against SMU and VCU, respectively, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying tournament.

As the tournament progresses, the intensity will only heighten, with the second round occurring on March 23rd and 24th, followed by the quarterfinals on March 26th and 27th. The surviving teams will then advance to the hallowed grounds of Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the semifinals on April 2nd, culminating in the championship game on April 4th.

Among the intriguing first-round matchups, fans can look forward to North Texas taking on LSU, Boston College battling Providence, and UNLV squaring off against Princeton. Storied programs like Xavier, Richmond, Cornell, Minnesota, Loyola Chicago, and San Francisco will also make their presence felt, adding to the depth and competitiveness of the field.

The NIT has a rich history, and this year’s edition promises to continue that legacy. Bradley, making its 23rd appearance, holds the record for the most NIT appearances in the 2024 field, highlighting the tournament’s significance and the prestige associated with it.

Tim Duncan, the vice president of athletics and recreation at New Orleans and chair of the NIT committee, expressed excitement about the field, stating, “We’re excited about the field that we were able to put together. There are going to be some great early round matchups, and it’s truly exciting to bring the history of the NIT – College Basketball’s Beginning – to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.”
