Skinner's Hat Trick Powers Sabres Over Kraken in High-Scoring Affair
In a true display of offensive prowess, Jeff Skinner etched his name into the record books with a sensational hat trick, propelling the Buffalo Sabres to a resounding 6-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken. The game, played at the Climate Pledge Arena, was a showcase of skill and determination from both sides, but it was ultimately Skinner’s night to shine.
Skinner’s first goal came just 3:56 into the opening period, giving the Sabres a 2-1 lead with a well-placed wrist shot that found its way past the Kraken’s goaltender, Joey Daccord. This early strike set the tone for what was to come, as Skinner’s lethal scoring touch continued to torment the Kraken’s defense.
The Sabres’ dominance was further cemented when Alex Tuch added to the tally at 5:41, forcing Daccord’s exit from the game and bringing in Philipp Grubauer to tend the net. However, Skinner’s relentless assault on the Kraken’s goal continued, as he found the back of the net again just 42 seconds after Owen Power had extended the Sabres’ lead to 4-2 in the second period.
With the Sabres leading 5-2, the stage was set for Skinner to complete his hat trick, and he did so in style. At 18:01 of the third period, Skinner received a sublime backhand pass from Jordan Greenway and unleashed a blistering one-timer that beat Grubauer glove-side, sealing his seventh career NHL hat trick.
Tage Thompson and Zemgus Girgensons also played pivotal roles in the Sabres’ victory, contributing a goal and an assist each, while Girgensons added two assists to his tally. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stood tall in the Sabres’ net, making 32 saves to help his team secure the win.
For the Kraken, Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers found the back of the net, with Eeli Tolvanen providing two assists. However, their efforts were overshadowed by the Sabres’ offensive onslaught, as the Kraken slumped to their fifth consecutive loss.
“He’s deadly,” Tage Thompson said of Skinner’s performance. “When he’s on, he can score and create plays, and that’s a big burst of life for us, especially when we’ve been struggling to score.”
The Sabres’ victory not only snapped their winless streak against the Kraken but also marked a significant milestone in their season, as they improved their record to 4-1-0 in their past five games.
As the NHL season enters its final stretch, the Sabres will look to build upon this momentum and continue their push for a playoff spot, while the Kraken will aim to regroup and bounce back from their recent struggles.
