Tigers' Kelly Sits Out Second Game of Doubleheader

In a battle of AL Central foes, the Detroit Tigers made a lineup adjustment for the second game of their doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Veteran catcher Carson Kelly, who started behind the plate in the opening game, was given the night off for the nightcap.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch penciled in Jake Rogers to catch the second contest and bat ninth as the two teams wrapped up their twin bill at Comerica Park. The move allowed Kelly to get some rest after crouching for nine innings in the early game.

Kelly has been a staple in the Tigers lineup so far this season, starting 18 of the team’s first 25 games. The 28-year-old is batting .248 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs heading into Saturday’s action. His defensive prowess and game management skills have been praised, helping to guide Detroit’s young pitching staff.

While Kelly got a breather, Hinch kept most of his lineup intact for the second game as the Tigers looked to split the doubleheader. Javier Baez, Austin Meadows, Spencer Torkelson and the heart of the order remained in place.

The decision to sit Kelly was likely a routine day off rather than anything injury-related. Catchers often get spotted rest to keep them fresh over the grind of a 162-game season. Rogers, Detroit’s backup catcher, got the start as a result.

The doubleheader capped a three-game weekend series between the two clubs. With the Tigers and Twins jockeying for position in the AL Central standings, every game takes on increased importance as the long season rolls on.
