Wright's Triple Homer Powers Clemson's Dominant Win Over Presbyterian
In a display of sheer power hitting, Blake Wright etched his name into the Clemson baseball record books on Wednesday night. The junior outfielder launched three awe-inspiring home runs to lead the No. 3 ranked Tigers to an 11-1 demolition of the Presbyterian Blue Hose at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
Wright’s historic performance saw him join elite company as the 17th player in Clemson history to hit three homers in a single game, tying the prestigious school record. Remarkably, he matched the feat of his teammate Will Taylor, who had also blasted three long balls earlier this season against USC Upstate on February 27th.
The game started innocuously, with Cooper Blauser’s sacrifice fly giving Clemson an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. However, Presbyterian managed to level the scores with a two-out error in the top of the third. That was the last bit of resistance the Blue Hose could muster as the Tigers unleashed a barrage of power hitting in the latter innings.
Jimmy Obertop got the party started with a towering two-run shot in the bottom of the third, his fifth homer of the campaign. Wright then followed suit, launching a solo blast to extend Clemson’s advantage. The slugger was just getting warmed up.
In the fourth inning, Wright uncorked his second home run of the game, this time a three-run missile that left the yard in a blink. His fourth multi-homer game of an already illustrious career gave the Tigers a commanding 7-1 lead.
Not to be outdone, freshman sensation Mathes joined the long-ball parade with a pair of solo shots – a 425-foot bomb in the sixth and another one in the eighth to push the score to 9-1.
But the night unequivocally belonged to Wright. With the game well in hand, the junior saved his most spectacular shot for last – a towering two-run blast in the eighth inning that finally ended the contest via the 10-run mercy rule. Wright’s 10th round-tripper of the season capped off an incredible display of slugging prowess that will be etched in Clemson lore for years to come.
The six home runs represented Clemson’s highest single-game total since their six-homer outburst against Louisville on May 1, 2022. Ethan Darden picked up the win in relief for the Tigers, who improved their stellar record to 19-2 on the season.
As the euphoria of Wright’s unforgettable night slowly subsides, Clemson now turns its attention to a massive upcoming series against the No. 7 ranked Florida State Seminoles. The clash of ACC titans kicks off on Friday night under the bright lights of Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
While Wright’s historic performance will undoubtedly be a headline-grabber, the Tigers know that consistent excellence across all facets of the game will be required to take down a formidable opponent like Florida State. If Clemson can continue flexing its muscle at the plate while receiving solid pitching, they’ll back up their top-5 ranking and solidify their status as legitimate contenders on the national stage.
