Xolos Look to End Winless Slump Against Santos

The Tijuana Xolos are in desperate need of a win as they prepare to host Santos Laguna in a crucial Liga MX Clausura clash on Friday night. The Border City Dogs have gone a staggering 13 games without a victory, a drought that stretches back to last season.

Despite their struggles, there is a glimmer of hope for Miguel Herrera’s side. They remain unbeaten in their last four outings, with their last three points coming courtesy of a hat-trick of penalty kicks from talismanic captain Christian Rivera in a 3-3 draw against Pumas UNAM.

Rivera has undoubtedly been Xolos’ standout performer this term, though goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez and youngster Efrain Alvarez have also impressed. However, consistency has been a major issue for the faltering giants.

Their inability to generate consistent attacking play has been a particular concern. Rivera’s penalties account for their last four goals, highlighting the lack of cutting edge from open play.

In stark contrast, Santos Laguna arrive in fine fettle, having won their last three matches without conceding a goal. However, that excellent run was preceded by a four-game scoreless streak, underscoring their own inconsistencies.

The visitors will be without the suspended Franco Fagundez, who was sent off after scoring in the recent 3-0 victory over Cruz Azul. Instead, the onus will be on their talented crop of youngsters, including Jordan Carrillo, Diego Medina and Santiago Munoz, all of whom are part of Mexico’s U-23 setup.

While Santos’ youthful exuberance makes for an exciting proposition, it also leaves them vulnerable to lapses in concentration – something Xolos will aim to capitalize on as they seek to end their barren run.

With both sides lacking consistency, an enthralling encounter seems likely at the Estadio Caliente. For the home faithful, three points would provide welcome relief after months of frustration.
